Guys,
Below see an abbreviated version of the note Jack sent out in March regarding the R-Day Reception. I (Bill Dworsak) was talking to Jack about this and he was sure I was volunteering to coordinate this effort, so here I am. Help me out guys. We need volunteers!!! Time is short. Jack has given me a few names but I would like to hear directly from you so that I can start putting together a roster by times.
The actual amount of time for the reception is 0630-1500 hrs. If we can get 16-20 guys we can probably have a 2 ˝ hour shifts with 3 or 4 guys per shift. If you have any preferences as to times, let me know and I will try to accommodate everyone. That pre- supposes that everyone doesn’t want the 0630- 0900 hr. slot. My e-mail is Sf727016@aol.com. Phone number 516-488-7257.
Please let me hear from you ASAP. I think we’ll all have a great time. This will give us a chance to meet a lot of concerned parents of some great young people, our future members of the Long Gray Line. I look forward to hearing from you but realize I probably can only get back to the first 100 or so guys that respond with in a week or so. So if you don’t hear from me be patient. I will get back to you. Thanks for all the support in this effort.
Bill Dworsak
R-Day Reception
As you may recall from Ted Stroup’s presentation at the 45th Reunion, the 50 year Affiliation Program between the classes of 1962 and 2012 consists of a number of activities over the next four years. The R-Day Reception is the first of these activities and is scheduled for Monday, June 30th at Eisenhower Hall from approximately 0630-1700 hours.
When we entered Beast Barracks, some of us made our way to West Point on our own while others were “delivered” by parents and/or girl friends. After dropping us off, parents and friends were pretty much ignored. Some stayed for the swearing in ceremony while others hit the road. Things remained pretty much that way until approximately 5 or 6 years ago when the R-Day Reception came into being. This will be the second year that it will be held in Ike Hall.
As I currently understand the concept of operations, incoming cadets and families “report” to Ike Hall. Once there, they are brought into Ike Hall in groups. Goodbyes are said, incoming cadets go to meet their “new best friends”, and families/friends can remain in Ike Hall to receive briefings on West Point and refreshments. I have requested more detailed information from AOG. Particularly important is a clearer understanding from AOG as to how many of our folks are required and when during the reception hours. Upon receipt, I will provide the information to the class. Hopefully not all reps will need to be there all day.
Bottom line is that we need support and help!!!!! Based on prior R-Day Receptions, approximately 14-16 reps from the class are needed to meet, greet, answer questions, and generally “smooze” with the families and friends over the course of the day. Classmates are encouraged to bring their spouses or significant others to assist in the activities. Because we are about 8 hours from USMA, Susie and I plan on arriving Sunday afternoon (June 29th) and departing Tuesday morning (July 1st). Other reps may/may not need to RON, depending on their proximity.
